Questions parents ask, clear answers.

First visit

When should their first visit be?

When the first tooth appears, and no later than their first birthday.

What happens at the first visit?

It's a short, relaxed visit of about 20 to 40 minutes. We count their teeth, brush them and take pictures. Nothing uncomfortable.

How can I prepare my child?

Talk about the visit in a positive way and keep your own dental worries out of it. Show them photos of the office and explain that we'll help keep their teeth healthy.

What should I bring?

Your completed patient form and your insurance card.

Can siblings come along?

If possible, please bring only the child who has the appointment, so you and our team can give them our full attention.

How is a pediatric dentist different?

They have extra training to care for babies, kids and teens, in an office designed to make them feel welcome.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes! Hablamos español: our team speaks English and Spanish.

Home care

How do I clean my baby's teeth?

Before teeth come in, wipe their gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Once teeth appear, switch to a soft-bristled brush with a small head.

When can we start using toothpaste?

Once a few teeth are in, using just a tiny amount. Under age two, use a fluoride-free toothpaste and teach them to spit it out instead of swallowing it.

Why do baby teeth matter?

They help kids chew, speak and smile, and they save space for adult teeth. If they're lost too early, adult teeth can come in crowded or crooked.

What causes cavities?

Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar left on the teeth and produce acids that wear down the enamel over time.

How can I help prevent cavities?

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, limiting sugary snacks and grazing, and regular check-ups with us.

How often should they come?

Usually every six months, though some kids need more frequent check-ups.

Treatments

Are dental X-rays safe for kids?

We only take them when needed, based on each child's cavity risk. With digital imaging, lead aprons and thyroid collars, exposure is very low.

What are dental sealants?

A thin protective coating placed on the deep grooves of the molars, right where most cavities start.

What if my child is very nervous?

We go at their pace and explain every step. For very anxious kids or longer treatments, we offer options like nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”).

Do you offer orthodontics?

Yes. We evaluate how their teeth and bite are growing, and offer early treatment and, in some cases, options without braces. More about orthodontics.

Do you make sports mouthguards?

Yes, custom-made from a mold of their teeth for a precise, comfortable fit.

Insurance & payments

Do you accept insurance?

We work with most major insurance plans. We help with claims and paperwork, and request a pre-estimate from your insurer.

What payment methods do you accept?

Most major credit cards. We also offer payment plans.

When do I pay for treatment?

Before anything starts, we review the cost and payment options with you. Your portion is paid in full before the treatment appointment is scheduled.

Emergencies

What if a tooth gets knocked out?

If it's an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, keep it in milk or saliva and come in within 30 minutes. If it's a baby tooth, don't put it back in, and come see us as soon as possible.

What if a tooth chips or breaks?

Come in right away, even if it's a baby tooth. If you find the piece, keep it in wet gauze.

What about a toothache or a swollen face?

Give the pain reliever you normally use and call us as soon as possible: swelling can be a sign of infection.
